language, literacy, numeracy, and digital literacy (LLND)

The 2025 Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) require RTOs to assess a prospective student’s language, literacy, numeracy, and digital literacy (LLND) skills before enrolment. This is a key change from previous practices where these assessments might have been conducted later in the process. The aim is to ensure students are well-informed about the training’s suitability and their own capabilities before committing to a course.

Why is a Language Literacy and Numeracy Test Important?

A language literacy and numeracy test is far more than a simple box-ticking exercise. For RTOs, it offers a powerful insight into each learner’s unique skill set, enabling the development of tailored support strategies. Here are a few reasons why your RTO should embrace the LLN Test:

  1. Identifying Skill Gaps
An LLN Test Australia can reveal learning areas where students may need extra help. By identifying literacy or numeracy challenges, trainers can take targeted steps to accommodate these needs.
  2. Improving Completion Rates
When students receive the right level of support—particularly in reading, writing, and mathematics—their chances of successfully completing their qualification increase. The language literacy and numeracy test plays a direct role in boosting overall completion rates.
  3. Meeting Compliance Standards
Under the Standards for RTOs 2015, it’s essential to provide learners with equitable training. Conducting an LLN Test helps ensure you’re offering training suited to each student’s language, literacy, and numeracy capabilities.
  4. Enhancing Student Confidence
Students benefit from an LLN Test because once gaps are identified, trainers can empower them with the right tools and resources. As their confidence grows, so does their enthusiasm and motivation to learn.

This policy mandates the following:

Pre-Enrolment Review of Skills

RTOs must have a system for assessing the current skills and competencies of VET students prior to enrolment. This includes evaluating a student’s language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) proficiency and, where appropriate, digital literacy. Such an assessment ensures that learners can successfully engage with course content and expectations.

Provision of Advice Based on Review

Once the review is completed, RTOs must provide targeted advice to prospective students regarding the suitability of the training product for them. If the review indicates gaps in LLN or digital literacy skills, RTOs should discuss any available support options or adjustments that can help the student succeed.

By fulfilling these requirements, RTOs not only comply with the new draft standards but also promote positive learning outcomes through informed enrolment decisions and tailored student support

LLN Assessment Tasks

These practical tasks are designed to evaluate real-world application of literacy and numeracy skills. By simulating realistic scenarios, they provide valuable insights into a learner’s current abilities and highlight areas needing improvement, ensuring that ongoing language literacy and numeracy test processes remain relevant and effective.

Digital Literacy Skills Resources

In today’s digital age, proficiency in digital technologies is integral to success. These RTO resources strengthen learners’ digital competencies, forming a crucial part of an LLN assessment strategy. By incorporating digital literacy development into LLN tests in Australia, students gain the technical confidence needed for both academic and professional pursuits.
